PEMF Therapy in Cedar Knolls, NJ
PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) therapy uses a coil to pass a pulsing magnetic field through your body while you relax, fully clothed, for 20 to 30 minutes. Research, mostly in knee osteoarthritis, shows mixed and modest results. At DWT Wellness in Cedar Knolls, NJ, it's a drug-free recovery session for active adults.
What is a PEMF session like?
A session takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You stay fully clothed. You either lie on a comfortable mat or Wendy places an applicator over the area you want to focus on. Most people feel a light tapping, or nothing at all.
There's no prep and no downtime. Wear comfortable clothes and skip metal belt buckles and heavy jewelry. When you're done, you walk out and go about your day.
Wendy Graham, our founder, is a certified MagnaWave PEMF practitioner. She is not a physician or a licensed clinician, and a PEMF session is a wellness session, not medical care.

What does the research say about PEMF?
Most PEMF research looks at knee osteoarthritis, and the results are mixed and modest. A 2022 meta-analysis across osteoarthritis trials (Tong et al.) reported improvements in pain, stiffness and function, though many of the trials were at high risk of bias. A 2019 meta-analysis of knee trials (Chen et al.) found physical function improved, but saw no significant effect on pain or stiffness. A 2026 meta-analysis (Chang et al.) found statistically significant gains that may be too small to matter in daily life, and that depended on timing and device settings.
Outside the knee, a 2025 review of shoulder impingement trials (Wang et al.) found a small, short-term benefit.
The trials are small, many carry a high risk of bias, and they used many different devices and settings. So the results may not carry over to every machine, including ours. We offer PEMF as a recovery session you can try, not as a fix for any condition.

Who shouldn't use PEMF?
PEMF isn't for everyone. Skip it, or talk to your doctor first, if any of these apply:
- You have a pacemaker, defibrillator or any other implanted electronic device.
- You are pregnant.
- You have metal implants (plates, screws, joint replacements). Ask us before booking.
- You're being treated for a medical condition and haven't checked with your doctor.
If you've had surgery recently, get clearance from your surgeon first and bring it to your first session.
How does PEMF compare to red light therapy?
PEMF uses a pulsing magnetic field that passes through your clothes. Red light therapy shines red and near-infrared light onto bare skin. Both have their most-studied (and still low-certainty) evidence in knee osteoarthritis, and red light also has some evidence for less soreness when used before exercise.
They aren't competitors. Plenty of clients try both in the same visit and decide which they like.

PEMF Therapy questions
Is PEMF FDA approved?
Some PEMF devices have FDA clearance for specific uses, such as the adjunctive palliative treatment of postoperative pain and edema in superficial soft tissue; clearance depends on the device model, and a wellness session is not a medical treatment.
Does PEMF therapy actually work?
The evidence is mixed and modest. Most research is in knee osteoarthritis, where some reviews find improvements in pain and function and others find only small changes that may not matter in daily life. The trials are small. We'd rather you try a free session and judge for yourself than promise results.
Is PEMF safe?
Most healthy adults tolerate a PEMF session well. It isn't for anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, or during pregnancy, and if you have metal implants, ask us first. If you're being treated for a medical condition, check with your doctor before booking.
How long is a PEMF session?
About 20 to 30 minutes. You stay fully clothed, and there's no downtime afterward.
Can I do PEMF after surgery?
If you've had surgery recently, get clearance from your surgeon first and bring it to your first session.
How much does PEMF therapy cost?
Your first session is free. Ask us for current session and package pricing: (973) 908-1524.
