PEMF vs. TENS: Which One Actually Works for Pain?

5 min read

Both PEMF and TENS are used for pain. But they work in completely different ways, and one goes a lot deeper than the other.

People ask us this all the time. They've used a TENS unit at the chiropractor's office or bought one off Amazon, and they want to know how PEMF is any different. The short answer? They're not even close to the same thing.

How TENS Works

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It uses electrodes stuck to your skin to send small electrical currents into your muscles and nerves. The goal is to interrupt pain signals before they reach your brain. It's basically a distraction technique for your nervous system.

TENS can feel good in the moment. That buzzy, tingling sensation offers temporary relief for a lot of people. But once you take the pads off, the pain usually comes back because TENS doesn't address what's actually causing the problem.

How PEMF Works Differently

PEMF sends electromagnetic pulses that pass through skin, muscle, and bone. It doesn't just block pain signals. It works at the cellular level to reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, and support your body's own repair processes. You can read more about the basics in our PEMF explainer.

The Key Differences

  • TENS affects surface-level nerves. PEMF penetrates deep into tissue and bone.
  • TENS masks pain temporarily. PEMF targets the root cause of inflammation and damage.
  • TENS requires electrodes on the skin. PEMF works through clothing.
  • TENS relief fades quickly. PEMF benefits tend to build over multiple sessions.
We don't tell people to throw away their TENS units. But if you've been relying on one for months and the pain hasn't improved, that tells you something.
