Surgeons are great at surgery. But most of them don't mention PEMF as a recovery tool. Here's why they should.
Here's something that frustrates us: people go through major surgery (knee replacements, rotator cuff repairs, spinal fusions) and nobody mentions PEMF as part of their recovery plan. They get sent home with painkillers and a physical therapy referral. That's it.
Why PEMF Makes Sense Post-Surgery
Surgery creates controlled trauma. Your body needs to repair incisions, reduce swelling, rebuild tissue, and manage pain all at once. PEMF helps with every single one of those things. It increases blood flow to the surgical site, reduces inflammation, and stimulates the cellular repair process that your body is already trying to do on its own.
The FDA actually cleared PEMF devices specifically for bone healing back in the 1970s. Orthopedic surgeons know this. But most don't bring it up because it's not part of the standard post-op protocol they were trained on.
When Can You Start?
Timing depends on the type of surgery. For most procedures, you can start PEMF within a few days once the initial wound has stabilized. We always recommend getting clearance from your surgeon first, not because PEMF is dangerous, but because we want to make sure there aren't complicating factors.
- Joint replacements: Usually safe to start within the first week.
- Soft tissue repairs: Typically 3-7 days post-op.
- Spinal surgeries: varies, so always get surgeon approval.
- Fracture repairs: Can often begin immediately if no external hardware conflicts.
What We've Seen in Practice
“One client came in two weeks after a total knee replacement. After six PEMF sessions, her physical therapist asked what she was doing differently because her progress was ahead of schedule.”
