Why So Many Teams Have NormaTec Boots in the Locker Room
Written by Wendy Graham, certified MagnaWave PEMF practitioner (not a physician or licensed clinician)
NormaTec boots show up in a lot of training rooms. Here is why athletes like them, what the research actually says, and how to use them sensibly.
Walk into a lot of team training rooms and you'll see NormaTec boots. Athletes mostly use them because they like how they feel. The research is modest: reviews find trivial-to-small effects on soreness. Here's what athletes get out of them, and how to use them sensibly.
Why do athletes like NormaTec boots?
Mostly because of how they feel. After a hard session, lying back while the sleeves squeeze and release is comfortable and easy. It gives athletes a set time to sit still and wind down. The over-the-counter models are FDA-cleared "to temporarily relieve minor muscle aches and/or pains, and to temporarily increase circulation to the treated areas."
What does the research show?
The effects are smaller than the marketing suggests. A 2024 review of lower-limb pneumatic compression for sports recovery (Maia et al.) found trivial-to-small effects on perceived soreness and muscle function. A 2025 review (Canez et al.) found moderate-certainty evidence that pneumatic compression does not reduce soreness 24 hours after exercise.
- Many athletes like how their legs feel after a session.
- Effects on soreness and muscle function are trivial to small.
- The evidence does not show faster recovery or fewer injuries.
- Sleep, nutrition and smart training still matter most.
What is a NormaTec session like?
You sit or recline with the boots on. The chambers inflate in sequence, from your feet up through your calves, knees and thighs, and then release. Most people describe it as a firm, rhythmic squeeze, and we can adjust the pressure. Sessions run about 20 to 60 minutes. We also have attachments for arms and hips.
Should you use compression before or after training?
Sessions can fit before or after training. Most athletes use them afterward, when they want to sit still for a while. The reviews above looked at recovery after exercise, and there's no strong evidence that one timing beats another. Pick the slot you'll actually use, and don't let a session take the place of a cool-down, food or sleep.
What should you wear?
Wear comfortable, tight-fitting clothing that lies flat against your skin, like leggings or fitted athletic shorts. Skip denim, zippers and body jewelry. If you come straight from practice, bring a dry change of clothes.
How does NormaTec compare to other recovery options?
Compression socks give steady pressure you wear during the day, while the boots are a set session. Our boots vs. socks guide covers that. Red light is different again: there is low-certainty evidence that light applied before exercise reduces later soreness, though studies mostly used lasers or clinical LED arrays. And the free options, like an easy walk, sleep and good food, are still the base of any routine.
How do you know if it's worth continuing?
Pay attention to how you feel. If your legs feel better for the rest of the day and you enjoy the session, it may be worth keeping. If you can't tell the difference, you're not missing much, and your time may be better spent on sleep or an easy walk.
Can you use NormaTec without being a pro?
Yes. At DWT Wellness in Cedar Knolls, anyone can book a session: high school athletes, runners, lifters, weekend players. Runners may also like our guide to compression after a marathon.
Who shouldn't use NormaTec?
Skip compression, or talk to your doctor first, if any of these apply:
- You have, or have had, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or other blood clots.
- You have open wounds on the area the boots would cover.
- You have a recent fracture or severe arterial disease.
- You are pregnant.
- You're being treated for a medical condition and haven't checked with your doctor.
- If you've had surgery recently, get clearance from your surgeon first and bring it to your first session.
