How PEMF Speeds Up Bone Fracture Healing

4 min read

PEMF for bone healing isn't new. The FDA cleared it decades ago. Here's why it works and how we use it for fractures.

This is actually one of the oldest and most well-documented uses of PEMF therapy. The FDA cleared PEMF devices for bone healing all the way back in 1979. Orthopedic surgeons have been prescribing bone stimulators based on this technology for decades. So when people ask if PEMF "really works," bone healing is the area with the most rock-solid evidence.

How It Works on Bones

Bones are piezoelectric, which means they generate tiny electrical signals when they're stressed or loaded. These signals tell your body where to send repair resources. When a bone breaks, that signaling gets disrupted. PEMF essentially mimics and amplifies those natural electrical signals, telling your body to ramp up bone-building activity at the fracture site.

  • Stimulates osteoblast activity (the cells that build new bone).
  • Increases calcium deposition at the fracture site.
  • Reduces inflammation and swelling around the break.
  • Improves blood flow to deliver healing nutrients faster.

Non-Union Fractures: The Tough Cases

Some fractures just won't heal on their own. These are called non-union fractures, and they're a real problem. PEMF is often used specifically for these stubborn cases because it can restart the healing process that has stalled out. Several studies show PEMF helps 70-80% of non-union fractures eventually heal without additional surgery.

Using PEMF for Fractures at Our Office

If you're recovering from a fracture, we can set up a targeted PEMF protocol. Sessions focus the electromagnetic field directly on the fracture site. Combined with post-surgical PEMF protocols, the results are often faster than standard recovery timelines.

A client with a tibial stress fracture came in expecting to be sidelined for 12 weeks. She was cleared to return to activity at 8 weeks. Her orthopedist was pleasantly surprised.
