That Shooting Pain Down Your Leg? PEMF Might Help

5 min read

Sciatica can make you miserable. When stretching and medication aren't cutting it, PEMF targets the nerve inflammation at its source.

Sciatica is one of those conditions that makes everything harder. Sitting hurts. Standing hurts. Driving is awful. And the pain doesn't just stay in your back. It shoots down through your hip and leg like an electric shock. If that sounds familiar, you're dealing with an irritated sciatic nerve.

Why Most Sciatica Treatments Miss the Mark

Standard treatments usually involve painkillers, muscle relaxants, and stretching. Those can take the edge off, but they don't do much about the underlying nerve inflammation. Cortisone injections help some people, but the relief is often temporary. Surgery is a last resort that comes with its own risks.

What PEMF Does for Sciatic Nerve Pain

PEMF pulses penetrate deep enough to reach the sciatic nerve and the surrounding tissue. Here's what happens when they do:

  • Inflammation around the nerve decreases, which directly reduces the pain signal.
  • Blood flow improves in the lower back and hip area, bringing nutrients to damaged tissue.
  • Muscle spasms that compress the nerve begin to relax.
  • Nerve cells get the electromagnetic stimulation they need to repair.

We typically place the PEMF applicator on the lower back and hip area. Sessions run about 30 minutes. Most clients can tell a difference within the first two or three visits, though chronic cases take longer.

Pairing PEMF With Other Therapies

Sciatica responds really well to a combination approach. A lot of our clients pair PEMF with red light therapy for deeper tissue healing. Some also use NormaTec compression to improve circulation in the legs. The combination hits the problem from multiple angles.

We had a client who could barely sit through a 20-minute car ride. After two weeks of combined PEMF and red light, he drove to the Shore for the weekend. That's the kind of result we work toward.
